Our Founder
Richard Chang
Founder and Chief Executive Officer
Richard Chang is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Roborock. Driven by his dissatisfaction with the state of robot vacuums, Roborock is a reflection of Richard’s belief that exquisite product design, focused on the real needs of people, will lead to a better quality of life for everyone. Since its founding, Roborock products have introduced myriad advanced technologies, won multiple design awards, and earned wide acclaim from media and users across the globe.
A graduate from the South China University of Technology with a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Richard has always been an advocate for the development of robotics and artificial intelligence. Prior to founding Roborock, Richard was in charge of Baidu Maps and before that a product manager at Microsoft and Tencent. By embedding his user-centric product development roots to the innovative philosophy of Roborock, Richard is able to direct the company to continuously create ultra-intelligent home robotics engineered to simplify life.
Milestones
2014
Roborock was founded in July 2014 by Richard Chang. With a vision to further the application of artificial intelligence in household robotics, Richard sets out with a goal to build the smartest robot vacuum the world has seen.
Within two months of founding, Roborock raised a Series A funding, with Xiaomi investing approximately 20 million RMB ($3 Million).
2015
Roborock raised a Series B funding, receiving a capital injection of approximately RMB 1.6 billion RMB ($250 million) from Gaorong Capital, GIC, among others.
2016
Roborock launched its first product in September with Xiaomi, one of China’s largest smart home appliance companies. Called the Mi Home Robotic Vacuum Cleaner for its substantiated footprint on the Xiaomi platform, it became the nation’s best-selling robotic cleaner, selling more than 2 million units by 2018.
2017
Roborock launched their second product in September, the Roborock S5, crowdfunding over 10 million RMB ($1.5 million) within 4 hours of launch.
2018
Roborock officially begins its expansion overseas, recording the best performing year since its founding, selling more than double the units compared to the previous year.
2019
Roborock launched the S6 in May. Bringing together enhanced algorithms and precision mapping capabilities, the robot can recognize the most optimal cleaning strategies based on the shape of each room, where users can also customize.
Roborock launched the S5 Max in November, allowing users to mop with precision water control and set mopping on a personalized schedule.
Roborock recorded a 190 million RMB ($30 million) investment in technological innovation throughout the year, substantiating its foundation for a wider range of products.
2020
Roborock launched the company’s first handheld vacuum in January, the H6. It is the world’s first cordless stick vacuum to use an ultra-powerful LiPO battery. In return, the device weighs only 3lbs and has a 90-minute run time.
Roborock was officially listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange STAR Market (688169) in February.
Roborock launched the S6 MaxV in April. Equipped with advanced dual-camera obstacle avoidance powered by proprietary ReactiveAI algorithms, it marked a new level of Roborock cleaning intelligence.
In June, Roborock S6 was named by the European Hardware Association as one of the best smart home products in the world.
2021
Roborock launched the S7 in January, the first robot vacuum in the world to combine ultrasonic mopping with intelligent mop lifting. Users can now vacuum and mop in a single clean without manual intervention.
Roborock launched the Auto-Empty Dock in July, enabling users to empty once every eight weeks.
In November, Roborock S7 was recognized by TIME as one of the Best Inventions of 2021. Hailed as a “Vacuum with brains”, the S7 is praised for its intelligent cleaning capability.
2022
Roborock launched the S7 MaxV Ultra in January, an industry-first robot vacuum system featuring a multipurpose dock that empties, washes and refills itself; winning 17 best of CES media features at its launch during CES 2022. The company’s first wet-dry vacuum, the Dyad, was also launched.
